WILLIAM PFAFF writes political essays for
The New Yorker and a column for the
International Herald Tribune and the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. Until 1978, he was deputy director of the European affiliate of Hudson Institute. Earlier, he had been a political warfare officer, a soldier, and an editor, as well as the author or co-author of four books on contemporary history and politics.
