JAMES MCAULEY is a writer in New York. He is the author of The House of Fragile Things: Jewish Collectors and the Fall of France, which won the National Jewish Book Award in 2022. He holds a PhD in modern history from Oxford, where he was a Marshall Scholar, and is a former Paris correspondent for the Washington Post. His writing has appeared in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times, The Economist, and other outlets.
